Should Your Child Play More Than One Sport?

Should Your Child Play More Than One Sport?
When our children are interested in sports, it is typically one sport that will catch their eye. They might enjoy watching soccer during an international tournament and then decide they wish to start playing. They may see others playing a sport like basketball, for example, and want to join in. Whatever sport your child likes, they will probably want to put all of their sporting effort into one sport. Is that wise?
At the Star Sports Camps program, we recommend that children try out as many sports as they can find the time for. While having one primary sport a child plays the most is good for their development, playing multiple sports can provide many benefits.
So, should your child keep their focus on one sport? Or should they think about trying their hand (or feet) at a range of different sports? Let’s investigate.

Playing Multiple Sports Is Great For Personal Growth
The first thing to note is that any child who takes part in multiple sports will benefit by being taken out of their comfort zone. If your child focuses on only one sport, playing another sport can make them feel like a beginner again. This might lead to them making mistakes or finding it hard to get to grips with the sport’s rules.
However, being removed from that comfortable position of playing the sport they know can be great for their personal development. For one, children are likely to become more confident in taking on new challenges. Once they start to get to grips with that particular sport, they will feel better about themselves. They can see their progress since they first started playing and see the improvement.

Helping To Stimulate Physical Growth
We want our children to be as physically healthy as possible. Playing any sport will help your child to stay healthier and fitter. Playing multiple sports, though, ensures that your child is using their body in a more wide-reaching way. Many children, for example, can find that an excessive focus on one sport alone can mean that they develop physically in some areas of the body but not all.
By playing many sports, though, your child can develop ‘physical literacy’ in using the entirety of their body. A child who only focuses on football/soccer, for example, will lack physical development in the hands and arms. By having them also play basketball, though, your child can soon find they see the same physical development in their arms as they do in their legs.
Being involved in multiple sports will ensure that your child can build better flexibility and core strength. At the same time, they will improve their stamina and conditioning simply because each sport asks us to do something different. Soccer might see you cover a lot of ground across large distances, but badminton asks us to get used to constantly moving around in a smaller space.

Improving Later Life Participation
Another major benefit of having children participate in sports across the spectrum is the improved likelihood of sports becoming a part of their lives. Playing sports is easily one of the most enjoyable ways to get fit, and ensuring your child has physical activities that help them stay active is very important. If your child only plays one sport, though, there is always the chance they will fall out of love with that sport.
It could be that they reach a level where they cannot play to the best of their ability, or the people they enjoyed playing with have moved on. Whatever the reason, though, it is easy for a child to stop playing sports entirely if they focus only on one sport.
If your child has a multi-sport education, though, they are both more likely to keep playing sports later on in life. This will ensure that they regularly take part in sporting activities that can make them stay healthier and fitter. By having your child attend a multi-sports academy or camp experience, they are likely to become more attached to the idea of playing sports for the rest of their lives – with all of the benefits that entails.
Interested In Attending A Multi Sport Camp?
If you believe that your child would benefit from attending a multi-sport camp, then we can provide them with the opportunity. At Star Sports Camps, we offer a multi-sports camp that is certain to help your child find their feet. By helping your child experience more than one sport across the month-long camp, they are more likely to be able to find the sports that excite them the most.
Our multi-sport camp programs are the perfect place for your child to turn to when they need a helping hand in finding the sport they want to play. A multi-sport camp, then, is worthwhile. Even if your child already has a sport they are passionate about playing, attending a multi-sport camp can help them to find other useful skills. Many sports can cross over in terms of the benefits, and how they are played, so your child can benefit from having a more varied sporting education.
